British Standard Locks

What are British Standard Locks and how do they affect insurance?

British standard locks and how the kitemark appears on the lock. The security of a lock can’t be determined visually, so physical assessments are carried out to evaluate the lock’s security by rigorously testing wear and tear over time and replicating the most commonplace methods of compromising the lock. The standards for locks are produced by the British Standards Institution (BSI). These locks are therefore known as ‘British Standard Locks’.

If a product has been certified by the British Standard Institute for meeting the required security standards, they will display the British Standard Kite Mark on the packaging and the product. To read more about the BSI locks and how they are certified, click here.

In terms of insurance, many insurance companies require homeowners to have British Standard locks installed on their doors to validate their insurance policies. This is because these locks are considered more secure and are less likely to be compromised by burglars. Having British Standard locks installed may result in lower insurance premiums or improved coverage because they reduce the risk of burglary and theft. We will only fit BSI Locks so you can be sure they are covered by your home insurance.
